Week 9

Week 9 Day 1- We carried on with editing our footage to get it ready for the finaly cut, we also arranged everything on our blog so everything flowed in order from the time we had done it.
Week 9 Day 3- We continued with editing our footage to make sure it was all in place for tomorrow night which is the deadline, and also completed the blog to make sure we had explained things in as much detail as we could. We also had to film 5 seconds of filming to add in to our nearly finished video
Week 9 Day 4- This was the final day we had to finish our editing and blog, we spent all day doing this to make sure we had everything did so we would not be rushing at the last minute since the deadline was 4.30pm. We also ordered everything so they were continuous with the subject of other posts

Week 8

Week 8 Day 1- We edited the footage we had to start creating our music video again as we had to do a full re-shoot of the whole video since we changed the stroryline and also our actors (drama students) we felt doing both of these things would bring us with a better outcome
Week 8 Day 2- We filmed more footage for our music video as when we showed our teachers the footage we had they thought it was too dark and it would not look good when put into our video.
Week 8 Day 4- We carried on with editing our new footage to make sure we had enough and that the brightness of the video was ok, we also carried on updating our blog to make sure it was up to date with everything that was needed on

Rough Cut Feedback

For our rough cut the full class watched our music video and gave feedback to what they thought we could do better, and what they already liked.
This is what they liked:
Good concept/Narrative
Storyline
Locations
Performance Lighting

The feedback we received for what we could change was:
To keep the costume the same
Edit shots shorter
Better drummer
Different camera angles
Singer to learn lyrics fully
Better actors
Mis en scene
Different locations
More emotion in actors face

From this we learnt we had to change a lot to make sure we were successful when the final cut was presented to our teachers. We decided we would completely change our actors; we found two drama students who were used to being in front of the camera and would be confident enough to portray a real narrative and display more emotion due to happenings. Along with this we kept our costumes constant instead of having it changing at different points in the video. We also got someone who actually played the drums to take Callum’s place so it would look like a realistic band instead of fake. When we were re shooting our footage we made sure we got more camera angles of the shot- and also when we came to edit it we did a variety of shots instead of just one long one. Finally we used different locations as we thought the living room scene was not appropriate so we used the kitchen to show the relationship this room was not commonly used in previous music videos we had seen so we thought it would be a good idea.
Along with everything we listed above we decied to change the whole idea of our narrative to make it more original and less predictable, together with our group and our teachers we discussed potential ideas for what we could change our idea to. From this we came up with the idea which we were inspired by 'Othello', however we decided instead of using a hankercheif we would use something a bit more up to date being a bracelet. Between relationships today bracelets are commonly passed around to highlight the relationship; we decided to do this to show the relationship between the couple, and how it can slowly deteriate if the bracelet was saw on someone else. Our new idea was that we would portray the couple happy and everything fine highlighting the bracelets, then the boy out of the relationship would meet another girl at the cafe- she then thinks it something that its not and touches his hand which leads to him leaving the cafe. On his way out his bracelet drops off (which shows his signature relationship with his girlfriend). As the other girl leaves she picks up this bracelet and puts it on, however when she is waking home she bumps into the girlfriend and puts her hand on her arm to appologise. Which the girlfriend then sees the bracelet and thinks there is something going on between them.
The girlfriend does not let her boyfriend explain and jumps to the conclusion that she thinks- then things exulate. The conclusion to our music video is that the boyfriend gives his girlfriend a new white bracelet, this signifies their relationship starting fresh the white highlighting this.

This is our rough cut video:

Week Seven

Week Seven Day One- We received feedback from our rough cut we had some good veiws and also some bad- the majority was not good. We decided we would think of a whole new narrative for our music video so it wouldnt be so predictable and more interesting. We also decided to ask people that were drama students to be involved in it. By doing both of these things we thought we would come out with a better outcome- which would lead to better grade.
Week Seven Day Two- We did a lesson on narrative theory, this helped us with our ideas and how to make sure our narrative was clear and how it could compare with Todorov's theory- this also gave us more ideas of how we could play around with our idea.
Week Seven Day Four- We compared how our music video narrative compared with what Todorov's theory was and also how it constrasted with this. We thought our new storyline fitted in with what Todorov's theory was as our storyline includes a initial balance, occurance and a new equilibirum. We have wrote exactly how this fits in with our storyline above.

Week Six

Week Six Day one- Today we carried on with editing our music video so it would be finished for the deadline, we also booked out the drama hall and the instruments we would be using in the performance we felt this was a good place to shoot it as it was dark and the lights would stand out more against the band which would make it appear 'indie' from what we have already seen.

Week Six Day Two- We filmed the band performace, this went successful apart from we could have got a better drummer who made the performance look more realistic

Week Six Day Three- We carried on with editing, and finished this for the deadline. The teachers would then give feedback of what they liked and also what we could improve for when the final cut was handed in.

Props, Costume, Setting, Hair and Makeup

                                                                         Props
When doing our research and what we already had knowledge of we knew that the props that were needed in an ‘Indie’ music video were instruments including: guitar, drums, microphone and bass. These altogether came up frequently when we did our research and are also necessary when doing a band performance, I think these things highlight and demonstrate what genre our music video is. Another thing which is commonly used in music videos are: Televisions, mobiles and ipod’s these are used to portray a message in a form rather than speech; this also illustrates media conventions as these are media products. We are going to do this whilst we are sitting in the car with the title of the band coming up on the Radio- we have not seen this done before however we have seen all the things listed above before. So we hope this comes across unique and different rather than the others which would just come across as repeated if we used them.

Costume
From looking at many ‘Indie’ music videos we gained knowledge of what the actors should wear when taking place in our music videos; the style of most people in the bands were very casual and in no way dressed up. It came across that the style was ruffled/long hair, polo shirt, cardigans, jeans, trainers and even hooded tops. We think this is important to make sure the style and genre fit as if it contrasts it could lead to people thinking it was a totally different to what we intended. We are going to use this style as it exactly fits with what we are trying to put across and is very much indie which is what are genre is. And we know from research that the style fits in.

Hair and Make up
These again are natural and causal and not in any way done up as from everything we have learnt we have knowledge that the ‘Indie’ style is casual. So there will be no drastic changes involved in this.

Setting
I think the setting is a big involvement when filming for the music video, as if the setting has no subject to what we are trying to illustrate it may make something come across totally different e.g. not how we want it to and not work well. We have chosen to film ours at the quarry, café, kitchen and also in Earsdon. We feel these go well with what our storyline is trying to portray since it is based around a relationship and are relevant to what we are trying to put across- which is a relationship going from love, betrayal and then to finish it hate. Choosing to film at Earsdon we thought would be a unique idea and not what you would expect, and would definatly fit in with our indie genre. Here are some photos:

Week Five

Week Five Day One- Today we started to film our music video- we went down to the quarry to start this, we got quite alot of filming done on this night as it was our main focus to get quite a lot of it done so we had plenty of time to edit.
Week Five Day Three- We started to upload the footage we had filmed onto the computer and began to start editing the footage we already had, we thought this was a good way to go around editing and then at the end we could put it all together and it would also help us find out if we needed to film more footage

Week Five Day Four- We carried on editing the footage we already have, we also made a list of props, settings, hair and make up and costumes and what we are going to use and also how they fit in with our genre this was good help as it made us aware of how important these were to the music video and how they should be kept constant. We also carried on doing filming.

Week Five Day Five- We carried on today with editing the footage we had took from last night and adding things on to our blog that needed to be done

Week Four Diary entry

Week Four day one- We started the animatic, we did this by cutting out our story board in photoshop then by putting all of the cut out pictures from the story board onto Abdoe Premiere Elements where we put our song behind it to show how we wanted our music video to flow with our sketches of what we wanted to take place

Four Four Day Three- We coloured in our designs for the poster, and uploaded all our analysis onto our blog along with our mood board and initial ideas diagram to  keep our blog update with everything we needed on it. Again we carried on with the animatic ensuring it would be finished by the end of the week so we could start thinking about filming

Week Four Day Four- To illustrate our target research we created graphs so we could show what came up when the questions were asked, we also wrote about each graph to show what we plan to do with what people had said and what ideas we would take forward and what we would not.

Week Four Day Five- We finished the animatic, this took longer than we thought as we didnt think it would take so long to make sure each scene matched each lyric, this ment we could now start filming and turn it into something real. We also finished off the graphs that we used to show our target research.

What would you prefer; Narrative, Concept, Performance?

We thought this was an important factor when doing our music video as these three build up the base of the whole music video so we would have to make sure we get it the right one to make it successful and what people wanted to see. Narrative and performance came up equally together- we agreed also as a group that we thought it would be necessary to put both of these in to make our music video successful. As even though the audience always like to see a narrative in the music video to make it more interesting, performance is always good to add in so you are knowledgeable of whom you are listening to. This also highlights the genre because you can see what style they are by what they are wearing and the mise en scene around them. However concept only came up by 20% and we don’t intend on using this as it is more abstract and we don’t feel we could fit this into our video and make it successful as well as we could put narrative and performance in. So we will be putting these two in, because we feel it is more necessary to our video and we think we can achieve more by putting using these two.

What do you prefer to see on a CD cover band or illustration?

We felt this was an important feature CD cover, this is the first thing your eyes will be drawn to when you see the CD. Therefore needs to be unique and different and also eye catching when sitting on a shelf, as there is hundreds of other ones already out there so it needs to look appealing. When we asked this question we wanted to know what our audience thought would look better, they said band- we as a group agreed with this also as this identifies who the band is when you purchase the CD and you can also recognise the band from this. Along with this it portrays the type of genre that your band is, by with the style and stance of the photograph that is placed on the front. We were pleased that an illustration didn’t get chose as we also felt that an illustration wouldn’t look as good as a band photograph, even though it would be more eye catching it would be hard to come up with a design that would be appropriate for our genre, album and the band itself. So we will be going along with the idea of the band picture.

What do you expect to see in a Indie music video?

From the research I have done it appears people would most like to see the band in a music video, this is appropriate to the research I have already done as from the music videos I have looked at they all have the band in instead of just there song and the whole narrative acted by actors. I think it is good to see the band as you know who you are listening to when hearing the song so we will defiantly do this when making our music video by showing a band performance. I also think setting is a main key point to think about when making the music video as they have to match the genre, we will also make sure that we don’t just use one location and make sure there is a variety.

What colour stands out best in a CD shop?

This question is one of the main features which I think is important as normally the colour of something makes you drawn to it which makes you interested. If I chose a colour that was not appealing and did not stand out then our CD would just blend into the background and not stand out, this is important today as there is so many CDs and lots of competition along with that so we need to make sure ours stands out on the shelf. The colours that were voted for the most were yellow and purple, we have not yet decided what we are going to choose but we will definitely choose one of these. We are intending on making ‘The Chasing’ title in black bold writing then have one of these colours in a distort outline which may be a bit blurred. We think this will look appropriate and eye catching on a CD shelf as we are going to make sure that along with the title the image is going to be eye catching also.

Do you think the chasing is a good name for our band?

We asked this question to find out whether our audience would associate our band name with an Indie band and also whether they liked it. It took us a while to come up with this name as we had to make sure our name of band highlighted our genre, as if we did not do this right it could portray a totally different genre. We used band name maker on Google but this was no use and we could not find anything that reflected our genre. We came up with this by the song which ‘Snow Patrol’ already have ‘Chasing Cars’, then thought of ‘The chasing’. A lot of Indie bands start their band name with THE so we thought this would fit well with what we wanted to do. And when we asked our target audience they agreed with us also and now we will go ahead with this idea as we ourselves and our audience think it is a good idea.

Sum up the Indie look?

When we asked our target audience this question all four came up equal amount of times, we thought this was an important question to ask as this covers the whole mis en scene of the video. If we didn’t have the correct style for our style it wouldn’t work at all as it wouldn’t portray the genre that we wanted to, so we had to make sure what we thought and other people thought of the ‘Indie’ look was the same so we didn’t make any wrong decisions. I feel this a very important feature for a music video as I think the style and look of a person can indicate what genre it is. We had already thought these things built up the ‘Indie’ look so we will take forward with what we had already thought and what our audience backed up.

Audience Research 2

Audience Research 1

What do you think we could put in our music video to make it better than others?

We thought that asking this question would make help us make our music video unique and original against any other music videos already out there. A good narrative came up the most when we asked this question, we agreed with this as we want our video to have a clear narrative that everyone will understand when watching it. As we feel that when the narrative isn’t clear it takes your distraction away from the song as you are trying to work out what is actually going on, it also helps when everything makes sense because if it has no objective to the storyline it would be pointless. So we are definitely going to make sure our narrative is clear and makes sense but along with this is unique and different. Location also came up with this when we asked this question again we feel this is important as too much of one location can make the music video boring so we will make sure we have a variety of locations rather than just one location. And most of all make sure our locations fit in with our genre and the storyline of our idea.

6/10/11What kind of mise-en-scene have you developed?
We have developed different kinds of mise en scene depending on when and where the scene is taking place as each places reflects a different mood ..
The mise en scene during the performance is kind of a dull and rural atmosphere that is why we decided to film it in Earsdon at the old and abandoned building- we thought this reflected our style and genre well since we are displaying the 'indie' genre. We had previously filmed it in the drama hall but we wanted to find somewhere more unique and different to what people had done in their music videos in the past. While we were filming the performance it was dark since it was later on at night we hired out the generate to ensure we had light on the night, this worked effectivley and added to our mise en scene as the light was reflecting on one side of the lead singers face this fitted in well with our narrative as the boyfriend in the music video is leading a double life by meeting up with two different girls so this could signify that to the audience. To develop the rural and dull setting we used a smoke bomb which thinly passed through the band this again emphasised the mood of the setting and added to the mise en scene to make it seem more mysterious and matched the tone of the song. The attitude of the members in the band is serious and emotionless as when we did our research this is what is normally always portrayed in the 'indie' music videos we have watched. We also felt this fitted in well with the atmosphere and also the mood of the song since it is quite emotional since it is reflecting the highs and lows of a relationship. And felt that having the band laughing and joking around wouldnt fit in aswell as this since it is not the tone of the song.
The mise en scene for the relationship scene at the start is portrayed by the warm lighting the colour and surroundings of the room is recognisably homey which is were you are most happiest; when you are comfortable in your surroundings. So we thought this was a good place to film the relationship at its best, they are both also wearing comfertable and relaxed clothing which adds to the relaxed atmosphere so they can relax and be thereselves around eachother.
Finally the mise en scene in the break up scene is dull there is no strong lighting in this scene which puts the mood at its lowest, so you are aware of the tension between the couple. Both attitudes are full with anger and this is presented well in the filming. They are both wearing dark clothing which again highlights the friction of their relationship falling apart.

What use have you made of unusual camera angles?
During the house scene we use a very high angle shot this is directly above the boy's head which we think is unusual, we thought this would be a good way to portray his emotions since it was from such a high angle. It also contrasts with how low he is actually feeling which i think is what makes it so unusual as he has so much above him and on his mind.

What has your style of editing atributed?
The style of our editing is fast pace this works well with our narrative that is taking place in our music video as it strongly emphasises how fast a relationship can go from being so good to something to something so different and this constrast is shown by this. The fast editing also lets the audience experiance both sides of emotion from both people and it also gives you more of an understanding of what is taking place in thes storyline as if it was slow edits some parts could be dragged out and your understanding of what is going on could be messed up. However with our fast edits this provides more shots of what is taking place and makes the audience be able to be more aware of the situaiton as they will be able to read their emotions easier since the same shot will be taken at lots of different angles to give an overall better understanding.

What is your age range?

For our market research we asked a range of people, we felt our market audience were of all different age ranges because this is what snow patrol already have, so we thought we would follow this through. Even though 35+ was the smallest percentage we know already that older people still listen to snow patrol. So we will still be opening our album to a wider audience due to this. However from this we already know we have definite market appeal from 15-20 and 20-30 as these were the main ages we asked when doing the market research.

Todorov

Initial Balance- In our music video The Chasing- Hands Open, the intial balance is portrayed showing the relationship of the boy and girl this is running smoothly like any good relationship. This is shown in their house in the kitchen, where they are shown together as any good couple and are messing around, laughing and talking as normal as couples do. Everything that is shown highlights how well there relationship is going with no defects in it, as the boyfriend is shown to look like he will do a lot for his girlfriend since he cares about her so much. They are also shown wearing matching bracelets- we decided to use these to represent their relationship, the colour of this bracelet is red which highlights the love they have for eachother. This is also very recent to what people do today when they are in a relationship together and want to show this to others by having matching things. We use an extreme close up of both hands to show their strong connection and to show their strong feelings for eachother.

Occurence- The occurance in the video then turns to the Boy when he meets up with another girl in a cafe; where he is spotted with another girl by his actual girlfriends friend. This contrasts with the initial balance and creates the questioning about the relationship that is portrayed in the video. After this the girl leaves the cafe which she finds a bracelet that the boy was wearing on his wrist (which has obviously fallen off). She then picks it up and wears it not knowing it will cause trouble for him and his girlfriend... Whilst they are walking down the street they bump into eachother which causes the girlfriend to find out they she has the bracelet on. Which leads to her thinking something is going on. She jumps to conclusions and does not want to listen to what her boyfriend has to say as it is not how it looks and that his feelings all lie with him. But she does not want to know and everytime he trys to explain himself she doesn't listen and just stands by what she thinks. However she does not know that he pulled his hand away and had no intention of anything like that happening. So everything that happens in this part contrasts drastically from what is portrayed in the first scene of the relationship going so well.

New Equilibrium- The girlfriend finally listens to what he has to say and gives in to him as he has approached her so many times to tell her his side of the story. She lets him in his house where they sit on the stairs and talk to eachother about it all. From this the gilfriend believes what he has has to say and takes him back.
The couple get back together- this is displayed by a new white bracelet. The white bracelet highlights the fresh start white- being a fresh colour and they both get rid of the old one that the other girl tried to steal and highlight something that wasnt what it seemed.
We felt this was a good way to finish our music video as the audience might not expect them to get back together since the way they are shown in the video as they are shown to be so far away of ever getting back together. So we wanted to challenge our audience and show them something that was not expected.

Gorillaz- Plastic Beach

Gorillaz- Plastic Beach

On all the albums that the Gorillaz have created, they seem make a different each time which they’re cartoon characters they also have since they were created, each album has a different story but still uses the same characters throughout. This seems to be their motif or the bands brand image which they have had since they have started. On this album they have decided that the story will be called Plastic Beach, and that all their characters are on this island after being kidnapped. On the front cover it shows the whole random island to which the band has created the picture shows it at night so that the text of the band’s name and the album name can stand out. On the back is another picture of these cartoon characters but this time it is in daytime and showing two of the many characters on a boat. Underneath them is the songs that will feature in this album, I like how they have their song not in one constant list they have spilt it into two. This is all on a white background which allows everything else to stand out; all of these songs seem to be about the characters journey towards this made up random island. Inside the digipak is a picture that takes up both sides of the inside, this is showing more of the characters that the Gorillaz have created. This seems to be on the island and seems to be a like a theme park to the album, they are playing a game of some sort of shooting. I will not be using this kind of idea for my digipak, because I am wanting to show the band members instead of the motifs though my motif/logo will feature on the digipak I am creating.

Coldplay- Viva La Vida

Coldplay- Viva La Vida

On this digipak of Coldplay they seem to follow the war theme which runs throughout the whole digipak and as well as the songs they sing. On the front cover is a picture of a war fight, which shows people in old war clothes and one solider coming out on top. This could be down to them wanting to come out on top in their genre in music.  They have their name of the album on the front in white colouring which allows the name to stand out against the dark picture of the background. On the back they have a plain black colouring with gold text, which are the songs and some extra information about the band, the dark theme has carried on from the front cover and looks very affective. This looks very nice and also links to the oldness of this album, which would attract people of an older age. Inside the digipak is pictures of the four members of the band, all are which are shown in a white and black form, which again links to the oldest style to which the bands Coldplay have decided to choose. They are playing their instruments in the pictures, this shows how much music means to this band and how much they want to be successful, and this has carried on throughout the years they have been around. And on the other side are black backgrounds again like the back of the digipak, this also have the same style and colouring of the gold text, which just says the band name and a quote which have decided that would link nicely to finish of this album.

The Kooks Poster

In this poster of the Kooks it shows something different that has not being show before that I have seen by any other band. Normally when looking at Kooks posters they typically have pictures of the band showing their faces and expressions for a suggestion for the album. However this is different they have decided not to show their faces and inside have shown this kind of poppy head look, which stands out against the background, and looks very affective. It also shows the randomness of the band and maybe their strides to stand out in the indie market. They have recently come back from a separation within the band, and I feel this poster shows new life to the band, though it still carries on with the way they were before. It is against a yellow background to allow the ‘poppy heads’ to stand out along with the bodies, with the strong red colour over powering the light yellow. They are separate in the poster and are unlike older posters where they are normally standing together, this could be down to new members being drafted in. Finally at the top is the name of the band, they have kept the same style of font as they had when they first came on to the music scene, this is still a modern looking font which would attract new followers but also keep the older followers of this band.
Since they’re heads aren’t shown they are unidentifiable, and I also feel the head also look like the centre of a micro phone, this could be saying that they do not care know is in the band, they just want people to love them for their music.

Kasabian Poster

There isn't a definite colour scheme for this poster, but it is mostly black with hints of yellow and green. These colours are linked with dirt and nature, which could suggest that they are a naturalist band. The band name is written in bold white, with the font being the bands signature font. This allows for their fan base to identify the band easily, helping to the popularity of them as the poster may bring in new fans, while still attracting their old ones. The poster only shows the bands top half of their bodies, while their legs are faded into black, mirroring the top of the poster with the bottom. This also adds definition to the bands faces, as they are almost in the centre and the lightest part of the page. The band is shown to be close together by them hugging and standing close, this shows a unity between the band members and suggests that they have fun in making and producing their songs, which will attract even more of an audience. The poster seems to be ‘Beatleest’, with the four band members showing their unity again with the simple background and them as the main focus.
The clothes they are wearing seem to be military clothing items like the trench coats and the shirts they are wearing, and although some parts of this do link to old Beatle posters, it does show them unclean and not clean shaven as well as ruff. I feel this shows what indie bands are like in today’s climate. I like how the band are shown together as one, and I feel this is something I would like to do with my poster of the band.  I also like how the background is ruff and shows paint that is scraped off, this may link to the band with the ruff, messy look they have.

Snow Patrol- Just Say Yes

In this video all Snow Patrol are shown together as one band, showing the unity between the bands. The band are wearing white casual clothes such as the lead singer is wearing a white tracksuit top and skinny jeans so are the rest of the band. They also have long hair and beards, again linking to the genre of their music. This video is a simple music video, but it is different to the normal Snow Patrol video, usually they are narrative/performance. Though this video subverts they’re usually video, it is a very effective video with the lighting that links well with the techno backing sound and then it lights up more for the chorus.
They seem to use lots of extreme close ups and close ups on the lead singer, whilst also using different angles to show the band as one. In this video I like how they have lined up their band with the lead singer at the front then the two guitarists, and finally for this video the keyboard players. Since Snow Patrol has 6 members they have a different line up each time they perform. I like the idea of having the set line up and I feel this would make our performance affective. Although this video does enhance the stereotypes that you would usually link to this band, it does convert the stereotypes by the video does not follow the concept.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW1hv37imjw&ob=av2n

The Verve- Bitter Sweet Symphony

In this music video the lead singer of the Verve, Richard Ashcroft is walking down a busy street in broad day light. He is wearing a leather jacket, black shirt, black jeans and black shoes. This links well to the genre of their music show the indie look to its fullest. He also has long dark messy hair which again links well to the indie look again. When walking down the street he does not have a care in the world and it looks like nothing will stop him walking down this straight path.
The lyrics seem to link to this video, this is done by the linking of the lyrics to the artist himself. In this music video, the artist is the main feature of it, and this seems to be the way with the most of the Verves. He is continually walking down this street, without a care in the world and without a care for the other public walking next to him. He starts of by walking from the side street to the top of the long narrow busy street. The way he does this seems to suggest that he is fed up with the typical nowadays public being moody and he has had enough.
Since he is wearing dark clothes with a black leather jacket, this could reflect with the feelings he has while walking down the street with the moody expression he has on his face. Since he has no care in the world to the public walking along side him, he seems to come across “arrogant and cocky”.
The artist seems to be mocked as he walks past some of the public, this represents to the way this country has changed with everyone having an opinion on people. This is done with the women from the car; she is mouthy and moody like many people today.
As the artist walks down the street he seems to standout against the general public, he seems to be the odd one out like he seems out of place.

Digipack analysis

This digipack is different to any I have seen whilst doing research. I like the style of the image on the front cover as even though it is so subtle it is interesting and intriguing to look at as parts of the image is highlighted which makes the image stand out. Again she is not posing directly at the camera, even though this image is slightly more posed than the other the image is still not staring directly straight at you. I think with how simple the photo is but with the image still quirky, represent the style of the artist ‘Florance and the Machine’ as she is quite unique in herself. The background appears so simple but it works well with the close up image the artist, as it appears like she is lying on the bed of flowers. With the album named ‘Lungs’ and the lungs of the artist literally coming out of her chest is yet so simple again and would be easy to think of but works extremely well with how the image is layed out. And you are instantly drawn to the lungs when looking at this which is appropriate since the album is called ‘Lungs’. ‘Florance and the machine’ is written in scripted font but still looks and is presented appropriate with the style of photo. I really like the way the image is put across with the ‘lungs’ and i think I will intend on doing something like this that looks simple but quirky, or maybes have a subtle picture with contrasting parts. The image on the CD is two hands placed together but it comes across to the audience as two lungs again which fits in with the album name, the flower theme is running throughout with the backdrop behind the CD being the flowers. ‘Lungs’ is written in white writing again simple but works well with the image. The back cover of the CD contrasts entiley with front cover as it is bold black with white writing featuring a detailed image of lungs, even though this is so different to what is portrayed throughout the digipack I think it makes it unusual as it is not normally what you would expect but however works well. I think you can do something so simple though when you have made the rest look so quirky. I could see myself doing this on my cd digipack as I like how it is almost unexpected.

Digipack Analysis

This digipack and the poster are identical to each other as the same picture is used on both being the front cover image, This is a good technique to use I feel as it will make the audience more aware of the band even though they are already a well-known established band. But if you saw the poster and were interested n the band you would know exactly what to look for if you wanted to purchase the cd,
Again this digipack uses the theme of black and white I think this is an edgy way to put across a picture as it comes across more interesting and unique. The picture of the band is naturally posed so they are not looking at the camera at all so it highlights the relaxed style of the band which is portrayed in both of these pictures. I feel this digi pack highlight’s the ‘indie’ style well with everything they have put on the pack, everything about it is subtle and the indie genre doesn’t need a posed photo shopped photo to make you want to buy the cd. This will influence the audience of the kooks with what they are wearing as they will more than likely dress similar. The mise en scene is appropriate in the image and I feel these pictures do this well as they are pictured with; long hair, guitars, and drums. Which are things you associate with the genre when you are talking about it. And these images don’t portray any other style than the ‘Indie’ genre that they are trying to put across. The title of the album is ‘Inside in inside out’, from the image I get the way it is being portrayed as the man featured in the mirror is out and they are in? So it’s like one member of the band is out whilst they are in.
The writing on the CD and throughout the pack is subtle, bold and straight to the point. It is easy to read and in no way fancy. I think the brightness of the red CD is appropriate as since the outside packaging is so dull this will stand out instantly as soon as it is opened. I think it is good how they have chosen three main colours as I think choosing more than this makes the representation look too busy. And when it is more subtle it catches your eye more. I will follow through with the three colour use when making my digipack as I think that is what the whole indie genre is about; subtleness.

Music Poster Analysis

This poster has 4 close up images of each member of the band showing what they do I think this makes the pictures look good as they are not staged and posed for they just look natural- these images look as if they have been taken from a gig they have done which is relevant to the poster as they are advertising their next gig. Even though this is very simple I think the colour distortion makes it look good as I don’t think it would have looked as good if it was just a normal picture of them. Their own vibrant individual colour makes the poster stand out to viewers. The different sizes of images also make this poster original and quirky yet it appears so simple. When looking at this poster you are instantly drawn to the red image of the main guy in the band this highlights his significance in the band as he has been given the bigger and bolder picture. The writing is the same throughout for ‘Artic Monkeys at the Apollo’, this gets it straight to the point for what the poster is about. The credits are in smaller writing as they are less important. The mise en scene is appropriate for this band as it shows their casual style and them playing their instruments which is a typical code and convention of an indie band along with what they are wearing and their image- long hair, polo shirts, t-shirts. Overall I like the idea of the bright colours on the images as I think this is a main way to make a poster stand out and that is what I want to achieve when making  my poster.

Music Poster Analysis

The image on this poster is a medium shot of the band this reflects their style since it is natural and not directly posed for the camera they are just pictured doing their own thing. The way they are positioned also reflects that they already have their image awareness so they don’t need to have the band standing right out of the poster to be recognised by their audience and also indicates how laid back they are with how casual their stance is and are not bothered about looking good and standing right out the shot by being photo shopped like most bands. The black and white image also reflects their indie style again by making everything plain and simple I think this works well with the image they are trying to put across. The simple style is continued throughout the poster with the words again being in black and white but still stand out as they are in a bold font. However the album title is in red which is instantly the first thing you look at which is effective as that is the thing they are trying to sell, their album. So since you are drawn to this you can then read around this if you are interested and this is what they have done as they have put what magazines think of the album slightly smaller, even though this does not stand out as much you wouldn’t be drawn in by this part anyways it would be the text that stands out and then you would read this if you liked what you saw. I think this works well and would look to doing this on my poster as I think sometimes things which are more bold and simple work better especially since the band I am doing is indie also.

Music Video Analysis

The kooks- ooh la

This video throughout is in black and white, this fits in with the style of the band as even though the video itself is so simple it makes it a bit quirky and different to average videos. I think the black and white footage throughout could also indicate how the video is past, as one lyric is ’she was such a good girl to me’ so it is like he is reflecting due to his girlfriend dying. Parts of the video are shaky and seems as though it has been filmed by them and as if it is their footage which goes with their casual effect they are trying to put across. As in most parts of the video they are just messing around doing their own thing almost like it is not staged at all. I think the most effective shots in this video are the high angle and low angle shots of the singer and of the surroundings, I think this makes the performance of a video work well as it is not just focused on the singer it changes to different images but back to the singer. Since a high angle shot is used it is like the singer is trying to address to the audience by looking directly at you at the front of the camera and I think this looks good and would think about using something like this when making my music video to make it a bit more quirky. Close ups of the band are used a lot through the video however are just quick flashes of them I think most indie bands use this to portray emotions, even though it is just a quick flick of them it is effective to knowing what they are feeling. The instrumental of this song is mainly guitars, the band is featured playing their guitars outside on different landscapes e.g. on a path, field. This again reflects their casual style and the genre characteristics that they are trying to put across, one thing I have learnt is that the indie style is not staged at all and is like they are doing what they want however this makes the video very individual. The performance and narrative is frequently blended I like the idea of this as when he is singing behind him is flashbacks of his relationship, which works well as this is what he is singing about. The song I am doing is about a relationship so I think this would be a good idea to use as the two things collide well since the singer in my song is also talking about a relationship.

Music Video Analysis

Artic monkeys- When the sun comes down

This video portrays what the lyrics say very well with the narrative they have gone with for the song, and every lyric is presented well in the video. This makes it easy to understand the storyline of it and know exactly what is going on. The video begins with a close up then flicks to a medium shot of the girl this technique is good as it shows the girl in two different views so we as the audience are aware of who the video is about  and it makes it more interesting than just one image. This is also effective as from then on in different parts of the video the girl is shown using an extreme close up to portray her emotions as she obviously is not happy and by her looking directly at the camera this makes the viewer feel sympathetic towards the girl. I think this is a good way to highlight that and I would consider using this in my music video that I am creating. The band instrumentals on the video is very fast and this is put into the video as each scene is constantly changing and everything is fast moving especially when it is filmed going through the city this is a good way to keep the viewers attention as you are constantly seeing things from a different angle. This also illustrates the girls life as she is always trying to do different things to earn money so she is never not doing anything however the speed of the instrumental and changing of scenes could contrast with her life as time may always go slow for her due to not having much of a life and no money. The man in the video is referred to as a ‘scum bag’ this is portrayed well with the lyrics as when he is called that in the video he is constantly grabbing the girl and hurting her which is why he is being named this and is not even worthy of a name.
One thing this video does not include is the viewing of the band and also a band performance I think this is the videos downfall as I think videos work better when you see the band in the video as you appreciate the style of the band more, I would not go ahead with what they have done and do this as I think that is the whole point of a music video- acknowledging the band.

Dairy Entries

Week one Day One- Today we found out what group we were in from here we had to discuss potential songs we were going to choose to base our music video around

Week One day Two- We researched songs we thought about doing and had to make sure that they did not already have a music video as then we could not go forward with what we wanted to do. To do this we searched on youtube- by searching artists we liked and songs we knew that didnt already have a music video

Week One day three- Again we carried on with our research and together shortlisted our favourite songs which didnt have a music video. We then looked through each of the songs and thought of potential ideas that we could do from each of them and narrowed the list down even more.

Week One day four- We decided on doing snow patrol- Hands open this was the song we all agreed on and only one that didnt already have a music video. We brainstormed ideas of initial ideas this included, costumes, location, ideas of band name, ideas of logo. And a variety of ideas we could use for the narrative.

Week one day five- We anaylised the lyrics in dept trying to pick out every little detail that we could create a narrative about, this helped us come up with what we wanted to do in the video because the lyrics in the song were easy to do something with which is another reason we chose the song we did.

Week Two Day two- We put together a powerpoint of all our ideas using slides to present this to our teacher, these included- song lyric ideas, location, props, costume, initial ideas etc.

Week Two Day three- We presented our idea to the teacher- they had the opportunity to tell us wether it was a good idea or not and also give us some inspiration to help us expand on the ideas we already had. This was a good help and our teacher gave us ideas.

Week two day Four- We then started our storyboard as a group and decided on what sort of narrative we would forsee, each of us had our own ideas. We included each of our own to make one better idea- it was useful hearing eachothers ideas this helped us expand all of our little ideas and turn it into one big one.

Week two day five- We carried on drawing our storyboard putting colour on to make it more attractive. We inlcuded camera angles and length of shot and also the lyric which would match each scene so when it came to filming our music video it would be on the paper already what we had to do so it would  make it less confusing for us

Week Three day one- We created a questionaire to ask people there own oppinion on our ideas and to find out exactly what they thought about what we had planned for our music video. This gave us the opportunity to find out wether our target market would like what we had planned to forsee.

Week three Day two- We interviewed people using video cameras using our media skills, form this they told us there oppinions to the questions from our questionaire. I thought this was a good way to get somebody's oppinion as it would be harder for them to lie since they would be on camera.

Week three day Three- We cut up our storyboard to create an animatic so we could put the song on in the background and see how our music video would flow with the ideas we had and wether our ideas would work, this was very useful
